A Surprise Appearance

What a surprise to see this Barred Owl
sitting on a birdhouse in a field we
pass on our way home on this very
cold winter late afternoon as twilight
approaches.

A Snowy Day for the Birds

To think this is just the 2nd snow fall since October...

As the wet snow fell,
the robins flocked to the bushes with berries...

Saw a brief and rare appearance of the red squirrel...
he is so fast, in a blink of an eye he was gone.

Birds on a Cold Afternoon

Yesterday afternoon while doing errands,
I spotted this gull nestled on top of a chimney.
What a smart thing to do on an especially
cold wintry day in Maine!

D spotted this hawk who landed on a telephone pole
and when I was about to take a photo the hawk flew
to the wire.

How magnificent he looked as the wind ruffled
his feathers!

The Summer Solstice

Happy First Day of Summer!
Was a hot and humid day here but this

Luna and Moon

To our surprise this afternoon, we saw
an exquisite Luna moth
on the outside wall of a bank in town!
Someone said it had been there a few days!

Another surprise was seeing 3 little baby eiders
this evening just before the rising of the full moon.

Ducklings

By chance, we spotted a duck family
on Friday... so lovely to watch!

Feathered Friends

On Thursday we were taking a scenic ride
home from Portland along the coast when we
spotted this threesome.

They appear to be best friends and
it was so heartwarming!

A Surprise in the Sky

We were riding home this afternoon
when D spotted a flock of Canada Geese
flying over the road from the cove.
I missed seeing them but as I glanced
out of my window, I saw a large dark winged
bird gliding by... not realizing just what it was.
D looked over and exclaimed,
"That's an eagle!"
He quickly pulled over and I hurried out of the
car and somehow managed to get several photos
and here is one...

Have you ever seen eagles in your
area?
It was very exciting!

Soaring

The gulls were hovering over the ocean as the
wind picked up this afternoon...they were so beautiful
to watch and I was thrilled to be able to
look down upon them from a higher
vantage point and to capture the moment with my camera.

Sharing a Log

A few weeks ago, when I bicycled to the ocean,
I paused to look at the cove on the way back,
and to my surprise, this is what I saw!

Back Home in Maine

I arrived back home in Maine last night.

While riding with D this morning to do errands,
I spotted cormorants on this dock.

As I jumped out of the car to get closer
to take some photos, I heard someone call my name.
It was a friend whose two wonderful corgi dogs I had painted
years ago.
He and his wife have a new pet in their lives and he wanted
me to meet, JJ and now I am looking forward to
doing a painting of JJ for them! Walked the short distance
with him to their home to meet JJ.

JJ is such a sweet dog, I took many photos and
will take more at a later time from which to work.

While at their home, I saw the 2 paintings I had
done of their beloved, Manny and Franklin.
One painting was small and the other the largest
pet portrait I've ever done!

Am so thankful that I stopped to
photograph the cormorants.

The Eiders

Enjoyed watching the eider ducks and their
young families tonight at the beach.
There were many groups!

I was also swept away by the beauty of the
beach roses just around the bend...

The Moon and Ellie May

As I stepped outside this evening
I saw a magical sight.
If you look closely, you can see
Ellie May in the left window of
the studio as the moon shone through
wisps of pink clouds.

Unusual Beach Sitings

Today was a day for unusual sitings at the beach.

Over at Goose Rocks Beach, I was trying to figure
out what I was looking at in the distance.
Turns out they're called Surf Scoters!
Stop by my Shells and Roses blog to see what other
sitings were at the beach today.

While gazing out at the ocean
under a beautiful canopy of clouds, I
spotted my first loon. They have returned
from the lakes for the winter.

Birds by the Sea

In the swells of the sea, this gull rode the
waves while the sparrows on the rocky shore
caught flies on this mild October day.
