Red Squirrel Sentinel

Looking through the window screen
this morning, I was surprised to see
this young red squirrel sentinel!
This is the time of year that the
red squirrel babies are old enough
to be out on their own discovering
their world!

Sharing a Quiet Moment

Brody and I were side by side
fascinated by what we saw just outside of
the porch.

The finches were gathered around the birdfeeder.

The little red squirrel had run up the
tree for safety.

The nuthatch had discovered the suet.

Isn't it nice to be able to share the love of nature
with someone!

Treats for the Squirrels

D bought a bag of marked down Brazil nuts
and shared the broken leftovers with the red
squirrels and this one looks delighted!

A Busy Day at the Bird Feeder

This morning I was fascinated by the view from
our window of all of the activity surrounding
our bird feeder.
It was a very busy destination and
everyone was moving very quickly for they
might have sensed an impending snow storm.
Among the visitors were the cardinals and bluejays,
chickadees and juncos, a tufted titmouse, a wren,
unusual sparrows, goldfinches, house finches, a woodpecker
and some very entertaining and enterprising gray and red squirrels.

Deep Freeze

The cold air is moving in!

This sparrow is all fluffed up trying to keep warm...

The squirrel was busy looking through the snow
for possible food, looks like he or she was about
to say something!

It's supposed to get much colder over the next 3 days.
In Maine tonight it is 3 degrees.
Here in Connecticut at my parent's home, it's about
15 degrees.

More Snow is on the Way

...looking for birdseed before the next
snow storm.

Baby Red Squirrels

Lisa's holding one of the baby red squirrels who had climbed up onto
her shoulder. She raised them and they seem to think of her as mom.

Since it looks like a stretch of some sunny weather,
today was the day Lisa chose to release the
2 baby red squirrels that she had so kindly taken in
and nurtured when they were separated from their mom
when only several days old. Lisa is a guardian angel to
abandoned, lost or injured wildlife. It was amazing
to see them as they stepped out of their cage for the
first time.
We hope they will be safe and meet up with other
red squirrels to learn the ways of survival
and keep warm this fall and winter.

The baby red squirrel is about to climb on Lisa.... as they raced around the yard
they would suddenly leap onto us.
