Another Big Blizzard

So cold and so much snow…
I sprinkled bird seed on the surface of the snow
for the birds and squirrels.

We have regulars at the bird feeders
this winter.
Today we saw the starlings, blue jays,
tufted titmouse, sparrows, juncos, cardinals,
chickadees, starlings and finches.

Getting harder to dig out!

Winter Robins and Squirrels

My heart goes out to the robins and other wildlife
who are enduring this very cold and snowy winter.

This particular squirrel is very inquisitive
and persistent in attempts to get the
sunflower seeds inside a squirrel proof cage.

Blizzard

So very cold today as the temperatures
hovered in the lower single numbers and
the wind swirled the fine snow.
Much activity at the bird feeders.

Down at the beach was quiet.
Sea smoke rose from the ocean which is
a rare sight.

A group of small gulls had gathered on the
beach and some were asleep. They must
have helped each other conserve energy by
being close together.

Saturday Morning of the Blizzard

Wow, we got more that 2 feet of snow, hard to tell from
the windows.
I looked out over the desolate wind blown yard to see little red
working his way over to the bird feeders.

Made it!

Hanging on!

Has company next door!

Where are the birds?

Blizzard

New England is in for a big blizzard this
weekend, a Nor' easter and it has already begun snowing
here. Woke up to about 4 inches overnight and there could be 2 feet
by the end of it.

We're in for a lot of shoveling!
Hope everyone stays safe and warm!

The Gray Squirrel and the Chickadee

When I opened the shade this morning
I was greeted by the gray squirrel right
outside the window and very close to the house!

He was devouring the birdseed bell!

The Chickadee came along to partake of what
was left of the birdseed bell!

Comic Relief

This gray squirrel has discovered something wonderful
in our yard and has been here for great lengths of time
enjoying his discovery.

He has quite an acrobatic technique.

Others love the bird seed bell, too!

A Day Full of Wildlife

Who would have thought snow would fall
early in the morning of Sunday, April 8th...

The chipmunk was filling her pouches
with the fallen crabapples.

D had put an almond butter jar that still had a bit
of almond butter in it out under the bird feeders
wondering who would discover it first.

It didn't take long to find out.

My surprise came when the gray squirrel with
the bob tail picked up the lid of the jar and licked
it clean.

This squirrel definitely claimed this and was very concerned
about not letting anyone else take
possession of it.
He ran off with the jar lid and climbed
into the tree for safe keeping.
I was astonished that the squirrel could climb
so fast and jump from tree to tree with such a big
object clenched in his mouth.

Was so amazing to see that and now I now
how some things get moved or lost in the garden.

Meanwhile the brief snow and cool temperatures
brought much activity in the vicinity of the bird feeders.

this beautiful pair of loons was discovered
when we took a late afternoon ride
and I think they will probably be going
back to the lakes soon.

Night Time Surprise

D went out to get something out of the car tonight
and thought he heard the bird feeders moving.
In the darkness he caught a glimpse of these
flying squirrels and hurriedly called me out.
We have never ever seen them in our yard before.

Happy to be able to capture them with my camera...

Earlier I noticed something the gray squirrel
was enjoying, wonder if he can do commercials
for breakfast cereal.

The Critters

One of our many resident squirrels was enjoying
the delectable crabapples yesterday morning...

along with the finch

while the little adorable red squirrel
waited for an opening at the bird feeder...

as the more finches and chickadees dined in a circle.

Winter Critters

A dusting of snow lightly fell yesterday morning
adding to the feeling of winter that was slow to
reach us this winter.

The crabapples attracted many birds, among them
the cardinals

and

the goldfinches.

The squirrels were also part of the scene
and this one also found hanging
upsidedown helpful in reaching for the crabapples.

The real delicacy for the squirrels suddenly appeared
when D threw into the yard
a basket of apples we had stored from
the fall that had gone over the top for our consumption
but was just perfect for the squirrels.
The apples disappeared nearly as quickly as they had appeared
as the squirrels carried them away and tucked them way up in the
trees for safekeeping.

Oh, how I love observing wildlife.
