Judy, I'm always on the lookout for birds and critters etc...though my parents house is in the suburbs, there is a little bit of activity. They have 5 birdhouses inhabited by sparrows hanging under the overhang in the front. I had just happened to glance through the upstairs window this morning when I noticed the hawk, so I grabbed my camera and flew down the stairs and out into the driveway and just managed to take a few photos before it flew away.
Great pic, Nan! I agree that it's a red tail. The females tend to be larger than the males...and both are pretty fair sized birds! There's a guy who blogs about the red tail hawks (and other birds) that he sees in New York City...some great pictures of the birds feeding, flying, on their nests, etc. http://urbanhawks.blogs.com/urban_hawks/
I'm an artist/illustrator specializing in ink and watercolors and photography. My little studio in Maine is nestled in our garden by a babbling brook. Everyday I draw inspiration from the pets who have touched my life, our garden, birds and wildlife critters, quaint old houses, children, shells, scenes of the seaside and more.
Hope to share my art and observations with you and don't forget to take a moment to notice the precious little things around you.
click "Kimbea" the featured pet above to see samples of custom pet portraits and info. I can work from your photos with ink and watercolors to create a lasting memory of a beloved pet.

You seem to be doing a lot of bird watching, Nan, and how quick you are with your camera!
