The Chickadee's Nest

Whenever I comb Brody, I save his fur
and place it on the honeysuckle vines
surrounding our front porch.
This little chickadee took me by surprise
this morning ... she was in the distance
and I wasn't quite sure what she was doing
til I got closer... I recognized Brody's fur
and the chickadee was gathering some of
it to line her nest.

These photos tell the story so well. How sweet of Brody to help out his feathered friends!
Charming, Nan.

Isn't that neat? I peaked in my nest box last weekend and found a blanket of cat fur covering the chickadee eggs. I noticed the same thing last year. Whenever momma leaves the nest she covers the eggs with fur.

Karen LR, that truly is recycling!

Judy,
If only Brody knew!

Marnie,
Oh, I didn't realize the momma chickadee actually uses the fur to cover the eggs! How wonderful!

Just catching up with this blog after doing the same with your other one!

What delightful photos and pictures on your previous posts. The Chipmunk and Oriole with the orange was amazing and the photos here of the chickadee with the fur are really beautiful.

ShySongbird,
Thanks for visiting! Now I know from Roses and Lilacs Marnie that the chickadees cover their eggs with the cat's fur!

:) There is something delicously ironic about little birds lining their nests with cat fur!

I have only just discovered your blog and look forward to reading it.
I have been offering my cat's hair to the birds for the past 2 years, it pleases me to think that somehow she's helping keeping chicks warm somewhere. There are times where the tits (chickadees) are taking it away faster than I can put it out!
Nice to see birds both sides of the Atlantic (we're in the UK) taking advantage of this resource...

Nathalie,
So glad you stopped by and thanks so much for your comment! I know what you mean about trying to keep up with providing enough cat fur for the birds at times! We're making fur trees!
I'll be stopping by to see your blog soon!
Best wishes,
Nan

a cat fur quilt to cover the chickadee eggs...what a lovely thought! I've been brushing Fuzzy several times a day because he's shedding his underfur like crazy...maybe i'll put some of it outside and see if the birds would like it for nesting materials.

What a wonderful idea. I've never thought of that.

quiltcat and oldcrow61,
you should try it with all of your cat's fur! You could keep a lot of baby birds warm in your neighborhoods!
